California Coastal Retreat 3-D Tile Installation
Copher Tile & Stone installed large 3D porcelain tiles on the bathroom walls of a gorgeous coastal home in Cambria, California. The tiles boasted a wave-like pattern and beach sand color that echoed the sweeping ocean views.
We covered the vanity to protect it from damage during the tile installation.
The tile in this area serves as a backsplash for the tub.
We installed the tile close to the outlets without causing any obstructions.
We grouted with Laticrete PERMACOLOR® Select.

The double mirrors over the vanity serve as a focal point upon entry.
The double sliding glass barn doors showcase the focal point.
The varying 3-D tiles were designed to align in a certain way to convey depth and movement. As such, it was important for them to be precisely installed so the artistic undulations would appear to be continuous across the grout lines.
The windows were cased with leathered Taj Mahal quartzite, fabricated, and installed by Pyramid Tile & Stone.

Our Tile Installation Process
Our first step was to carefully measure our workspace, including the walls, floors, windows, vanity cabinet, and tub shelf. We planned the layout to eliminate any awkward tile cuts or unnecessary disruption of the flow of the overall pattern.
Before we began the tile installation process, we placed protective coverings on the floor and vanity.
DensShield®, a tile backer board with a built-in moisture barrier and a mold and water-resistant, treated core, was the ideal tile underlayment for this project. We used TRI-LITE® Laticrete mortar to adhere the back side of the tile to the backer board. This mortar has a thicker consistency and non-sag properties, meaning it did a great job fighting against gravity and holding the tile in place until the thinset cured. In addition, we used tile spacers to keep the tiles from shifting or sliding out of place.
We grouted with Laticrete PERMACOLOR® Select, which has numerous benefits over other types of grout, including advanced stain resistance and antimicrobial properties. For grout lines where surfaces changed direction (technically called “change of plane”), such as perimeter joints, we caulked with Colorfast Ultra Performance Caulk to match the other grout lines. This extra step will help prevent cracking caused by movement.
