Homeowners in San Luis Obispo, California, were dissatisfied with the builder-grade appearance of their master bedroom. They contacted a local designer, Michelle Pelech, Owner and Principal Designer of Michelle Pelech Interiors. She felt that a thin brick accent wall would enhance the room’s appeal and align with the homeowners overall design goals and referred her client to us to provide high quality thin brick installation services.
Our first step was to prepare the workspace. We helped the client move the furniture to the side and masked and protected the floors and other surfaces. As with any tile installation, proper substrate prep is crucial. To create a stable and durable foundation for the surface materials, we installed cement backer board (aka, cement backer unit or CBU).
We installed the brick with a non-sag modified mortar. This type of thinset provides superior adhesion to help ensure the durability of vertical installations. We grouted with mason mix using a grout bag, reminiscent of an icing bag that bakers use to decorate cakes. We also tooled the joints for a rustic look, that is, we removed the excess grout and gave the spaces between the bricks an aesthetically pleasing shape.
The homeowners were surprised at what a dramatic difference the brick accent wall made in their bedroom and how it provided a lot more visual interest than a typical painted accent wall.
